About us
Miles Vance is a second-generation newspaper reporter and photographer who grew up in St. Helens, Oregon, and later graduated from the University of Portland with a Bachelor's degree in communications in 1986.
He began his professional journalism career with a two-year stint in Portland at two of Pry Publishing's monthly newspapers, the Hollywood Star and Mid-County Memo.
After that came Vance's first professional work as a Sports Editor and sports photographer, a run of 4-1/2 years at the Chronicle and Sentinel Mist newspaper in St. Helens, a paper Vance's father had worked for in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In addition to his efforts in sports, Vance also wrote features, covered Scappoose city government and the St. Helens Port Commission.
Next came 2-1/2 years at the Scappoose Spotlight, another publication in the St. Helens-Scappoose market, again as Sports Editor with additional duties covering Scappoose City Council, the Scappoose Planning Commission, Scappoose School Board and St. Helens Port Commission.
It was after Vance's time in Scappoose, a time that also saw him marry his wife Bonnie and purchase his first home, that he then moved on to his current position at the Beaverton Valley Times beginning late in the fall of 1995. Over his 20 years in the newspaper business, Vance has been honored with dozens of writing and sports journalism awards.
Vance now lives in Beaverton with his wife, his children Haley and Devin, and their various dogs, cats and fish. In his spare time, he enjoys playing softball and golf, playing with his children, and staying active in his church, Murray Hills Christian Church.
